Sitting next to someone everyday in art who is amazing with pen and ink really makes you want to try it yourself. So, to try pen and ink again, I decided to use this medium for the nature vs mechanical project. All throughout the tree in the foreground there are gears and tubing and wiring to show how the natural trees can also be mechanical. It shows how only the inside of the trunk/thicker part of the tree and the branches are mechanical, almost like every tree is secretly mechanical inside. As for the background, the trees stretch out all the way to the horizon, with a sky that becomes darker as you look up. Completing this project made me feel more confident in my pen work and how to use hatching the get the shadings of the shadows and darker areas.
No one truly wants to draw or paint a self portrait, so I decided to draw myself but not my face. Senior year has been exhausting and I wanted to show that through this next project, so I drew this based off a picture I took. I used prismacolors again and improved my techniques of shadowing and layering. If needed, I can use this in a future portfolio to show my growth. I've always been terrified to attempt to draw fur or hair. However, it's not as hard as you would think. I used prismacolors to draw my dog Abbey. I learned how to bring out the highlights on her fur by using a white gel pen and to darken the darker sections of her fur by layer the colors. I'm not completely satisfied with the complete drawing, so I've started another one and plan to add my other dog Godiva in as well. Painting seemed like a foreign subject to me so this project helped my talents grow tremendously. Learning how to lay down oil paints was tricky at first, but after a couple practice rounds I was able to begin my painting. The NC State's Hunt Library has fascinating chairs that range with wide varieties, so I took a picture of one type of chair there and chose it for my project. I tried to incorporate different colors that weren't originally in the picture into the shadows and highlights. Pen and ink had always fascinated me so I decided to take my turn at it. With the detailed surface of the shells and the shadow of the ceramic, I tried to make values to show how the shadows differ from the original surfaces. I learned that I still have a lot of work to do to strengthen my pen and ink skills, but this was a good learning experience on how to use only one color.
